The word pool traces back to a real Latin text from 45 BC

The 76 words this tool draws from aren't random syllables — they're pulled from a genuinely scrambled passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a philosophical text written around 45 BC. The connection was largely obscure until 1982, when Richard McClintock, a publishing-industry Latin scholar, traced the word "consectetur" back to section 1.10.32 of that text while researching the origin of the phrase, confirming that centuries of typesetters' filler copy had descended from a real classical source rather than being invented wholesale. That's why the words here read as plausible Latin fragments — "labore," "dolore," "aliqua," "voluptate" — even though the sentences built from them carry no actual meaning.

Sentence and paragraph length vary within a set range, not fixed

Every generated sentence lands somewhere between 6 and 14 words, chosen randomly per sentence rather than using a single fixed length, so the output reads with more natural rhythm than repeating identically-sized sentences would. Paragraphs follow the same idea one level up: each one contains a randomly chosen 3 to 6 sentences. This variation is what keeps longer generated blocks from looking mechanically uniform when you're previewing how real paragraph lengths will break across a layout.

The classic opener appears exactly once, not once per paragraph

With "Start with 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…'" checked, that literal opening sentence is inserted only as the very first sentence of the very first paragraph — every paragraph after that, and every sentence after the first, is built from freshly randomized words. This matches how the classic opener is traditionally used as a recognizable signal that a block of dummy text has started, rather than something meant to repeat throughout.

Generation is click-triggered, unlike most tools on this site

Most tools here update live as you type, but this one waits for the Generate button. That's a deliberate difference: since the amount field expects a number you're actively editing, regenerating the entire output on every keystroke while you type "100" would flash through partial, meaningless states ("1" word, then "10" words, then "100") before you finish typing, which is worse than just waiting for an explicit click.

The word count stat uses the same method as the Word Counter tool

After generating, the Words stat is calculated by trimming the output and splitting it on runs of whitespace, the same whitespace-split approach used by this site's dedicated Word Counter tool. That keeps the number you see here consistent with what you'd get pasting the same generated text into that tool separately.

Why designers still reach for nonsense text instead of real sentences

The core reason Lorem Ipsum has survived as a design convention for over five centuries — it appears in specimen books from the 1500s and was popularized again in the 1960s through Letraset transfer sheets — is that readable filler text actively distracts from the thing being evaluated. Drop in real English sentences and a client or reviewer starts reading them, judging the content, and commenting on the copy instead of the layout, spacing, and typography the mockup is actually meant to test. Meaningless but visually language-like text solves that by giving the eye something with realistic word lengths, sentence rhythm, and paragraph shape, without any actual meaning competing for attention.

Practical limits worth knowing

The Amount field accepts values from 1 up to 200, which comfortably covers a paragraph of body copy, a full page mockup, or a long-form article placeholder without needing multiple generations. Because every word is drawn independently at random from the same 76-word pool, short outputs (a handful of words or a single short sentence) can occasionally repeat a word twice in close succession — an accurate reflection of how random sampling with replacement behaves, not a bug, though it's more noticeable at very small word counts than in a full paragraph where it blends in.
